Perry was born to actors Laurie Metcalf, and Jeff Perry. Her first appearance was on television as Jackie Harris, a character played by her mother in her role on the ABC comedy Roseanne. The actress did not go on to explore acting as a profession until she reached the age of adulthood due to her parents being concerned about the adverse effects that stress could have. Perry confessed that she wasn't at ease in the stage during high school. She began acting to meet new people at Northwestern University after switching from Boston University. Perry left for New York, where she got small roles on shows like Law & Order: Criminal Intent. The feeling of homesickness led Perry home to California which was where theatre jobs were readily available. Perry was a part of Broadway with her mother in The Other Place with her mother in the year 2013. Her father Kevin McKidd performed in Eugene O'Neill's Pulitzer prize-winning film Anna Christie alongside her in 2015. Perry played a role in 9 episodes of the ABC thriller The Family in 2016. Her father portrayed her in her role on the ABC drama Scandal. The same year, she played a young model of Mary Cooper on Young Sheldon (a CBS spinoff The Big Bang Theory) as her mother as a young version. She got the part in an audition that was open despite being connected to this role.
